Home Truly Project

2020

In collaboration with the National Museum of Singapore's exhibition, 'Home Truly: Growing up with Singapore, 1950s to the present', I joined a group of youths in a session of content creation for this exhibition.

I was interested in this opportunity as I enjoy listening to stories about Singapore from the older generation and I wanted to do my part to share with others what I have learnt.

You can take a look at the write-up I did here. Additionally, I did a second write-up with the museum which was published into their official exhibition companion book which can be purchased at the museum itself!

Volunteering

2020

In light of the COVID-19 situation, I wanted to give back to the community in whatever way I could during this tough time for everyone. I was given the chance to volunteer under Thye Hua Kuan & Temasek Foundation for #BYOBclean, an initiative that gives all Singaporean households 500ml of zero alcohol hand sanitiser with their clean, used bottles.

Through this experience, I have learnt that we can only overcome these tough periods when we are united as one.

Fei Yue Senior

Activity Centre

2019

As part of the preparation for Verve 2019, I was involved with carrying out art activities weekly for 4 weeks with the seniors at Fei Yue SAC. Appointed as a Verve Group Leader, I was tasked to plan programs and activities that were suitable for the seniors.

I had a very enjoyable time doing art & crafts with the seniors. Some being string art and finger painting. I also hosted weekly bingo games which they thoroughly enjoyed. From this, I have learnt to care for seniors in our community.

Youth Expedition Project

2019 - 2020

Organized by Youth Corps Singapore, the Youth Expedition Project (YEP) is a youth development programme that encourages issue-based learning among youth. This is through community Service-Learning projects.

I have had the opportunity to go on two YEP trips. The first one to Danang, Vietnam in September 2018 and the second one to Dumaguete, the Philippines in March 2019.

Dumaguete, Republic of the Philippines

9 - 21 March 2019

I embarked on a twelve days service-learning trip to the city of Dumaguete in the Republic of the Philippines as part of Ngee Ann Polytechnic's Christieara Programme Youth Expedition Project 2019. On this trip, I had the chance to immerse myself into the culture of Dumaguete and also give back to the community there while learning many things as well.

What I Did:

  • Member of the cultural exchange team

  • Brainstormed ideas for performances that best showcased Singapore's culture

  • Organised rehearsals and meetings before and during the trip

  • Helped with the cooking of Singaporean dishes to share with the locals there

  • Helped in the refurbishment of a school

  • Participated in teaching children about nutrition, hygiene and math

  • Emceed for several impromptu performances

What I Learnt:

  • How to adapt to impromptu situations

  • Communicating despite language barriers

  • How to speak to a large crowd and keep it engaging

  • Increased knowledge of the Philippines

Danang, Vietnam

4 - 16 September 2018

I spent twelve days in Danang, Vietnam serving the community in various ways. I learnt many valuable lessons with this being my first overseas service-learning trip. Throughout the intensive pre-trip preparations and a post-trip local project, I have gained many new friendships not just in Singapore but in Vietnam as well.

What I Did:

  • Part of the celebration night planning committee

  • Brainstormed ideas for performances that showcased Singapore's culture while also appreciating Vietnam's culture

  • Created an event schedule/timeline from scratch

  • Emceed for our celebration night with more than 500 people attending

  • Helped with the re-roofing of houses and renovations of a school

  • Conducted workshops to teach local youths basic English and critical thinking skills

What I Learnt:

  • How to overcome language barriers
